Choices? No Changes!

Nothing is ever easy, however some things in life generally are geared towards making it easier.  I would never in my life agree with the statement "College is easy."  after my first two semesters at a big main university, I however would agree with the statement that our school and my sorority do everything in their power to make sure It's as easy as they can make it.  I wish for everyone's sake that it were true college were easy however, what would that mean for the future of our world if just anyone could graduate with a degree.  And no matter how hard they try there are certain things in college no one but you yourself can learn and do anything about.

A lot of what makes college so difficult is that in large part college is about finding yourself.  In as many ways possible.

·         Your religion:  will you choose to continue on in the ways of your parents or will you forge a new path with your new freedom and find a new way.

·         Your career:  will you do what you always thought you would or will something else pop up that makes so much more sense that, or maybe you will change your mind ten times before you can find what's right for you.

·         Politics:  Will you take on the things that you grew up hearing about?  Will you go to protest against what you grew up hearing?

·         Yourself:  Will you continue to hide behind makeup?  Will you still be the quiet one in the corner?  Will you always tone down your outfit afraid of what others think?

·         Relationships:  Do you want to stay with the boy from high school that you feel you have outgrown and grown distant from?  Do you want to boy hop from one boy to another each week?  Are you ready to settle down?  or do you want to play hookie for a couple years before getting serious?

·         Friends:  Will you continue to be friends with girls who you feel make you think less of yourself?  Or will you continue to be the girl that has to have every guy even if it's your friends guy?

College is full of wonder and deciding and finding one's self.  But for one moment imagine the time it is going to take you to learn all of this about yourself.  I myself am in my second year almost third and have only barely scratched the surface of friends, politics, my career and my religion.  I have no clue what I will find out about myself or about my relationships or any of it in the last bit of time I have here at the university but I do know that this is barely touching the enormous pressures of college.

The other things that make college hard are as follow.

·         Greek life:  Do you want to join greek life?  Are you willing to be labeled shallow for "buying your friends"?  Do you want a sisterhood?  Do you want the commitment it takes?  The hours you put in?  Is it all parties?  Or is there more?  Which one should i be in?  What if i don't find one i fit in with?

·         Parties:  Oh no I don't have any friends Im not popular I won't get invited to any parties!  I need to make friends.  Oh no i don't really know how to talk to guys will i still get invited?  What do i wear?

·         Sports:  Should I tryout for a team? Do i have time to be on a team? Should I join an intramural?  Should I join this team with my friends? What about studying?

·         On Campus Activities: There's a free movie tonight! Lets Go!  Oh Gosh lets go out to that free concert!  But my studies? Or what if I don't do it now and then I never get to?

So I realize this does not happen to everyone, but these are generally issues I see all of my friends and I go through.  Not one of us has not had one of these thoughts or had to come to the other for help with one of these.  But the biggest challenge you will face in school is:

·         Class/Grades

o   Ditching: should i ditch?  Well i went out last night maybe I should sleep in!  Its only one class!  I'll be there the next day. (until you're not.)

o   Homework:  Should i do my homework now or after that game?  What if i just go out for a little while?  Ehh there will be more grades.  I don't need this one.

o   Tests:  I can get by with studying for an hour.  Studies for six hours...fails the test.  realizes you have a very hard teacher and fails the test.

There is so much to do in college and there are so many ways to change, get distracted and to lose time.  This article was soely meant for more people to understand that college is more than parties.  A lot of what is above is viewed as horribly superficial but it is the truth as to what goes on in college.  It is what happens in our minds and it is what we constantly are thinking about.
